Lunar Eclipse 8 October 2014

On 8 October 2014 at 10:50UT, there will be a total lunar eclipse. This eclipse is the 42nd of Saros series number 127, which is composed of 72 eclipses. The duration of this lunar eclipse will be 58 minutes.

The eclipse will be visible from the Pacific Ocean and bordering regions.

Lunar Eclipse 8 Oct 2014

The astrological chart below, cast for the location of Singapore, shows the event:

8 Oct 2014 Lunar Eclipse Singapore

In all lunar eclipses, we have to take into consideration two sensitive points, namely the placement of the Moon and that of the Sun, which are opposing each other. In this case the eclipsed Moon is located in Aries, and a look at the table of Essential Dignities and Debilities shows us that she is peregrine (that is, not essentially dignified).

The Sun is in the sign of Libra, wherein he is essentially debilitated, being in his fall. This basic information already provides us with important insights into the nature of the upcoming eclipse. We are able to predict that the energy of the eclipse will most likely be rather negative.

Mars is the dispositor of the eclipsed Moon in Aries. He is peregrine here. The Sun, ruler of the second decanate of Aries, is essentially debilitated, as already mentioned above. William Lilly tells us in his pamphlet on the judgment of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses:

“For when the place Eclipsed, or Eclipse itself, shall be in the Ascendant, the effects shall then begin in the 1, 2, 3, and 4. moneth next after the appearance of the Eclips, …”

To find out more about the possible general effects of this eclipse, we can turn to William Lilly again. He writes in his Annus Tenebrosus, or The Dark Year, about a lunar eclipse with the Moon in the second decanate of Aries:

“… a Pestilence, and fatality in most disease, few falling sick that escape.”

8 Oct Lunar Eclipse world map

The next step is to determine where the effects of the eclipse will be felt strongly and immediately. The general rule here is that the smaller the distance between the Sun or Moon and any of the angles, the stronger the effects of the eclipse will be. Furthermore, we can say that there is a correlation between the Ascendant, Medium Coeli or Descendant, and the time of the onset of the eclipse’s effect. If the eclipsed Moon is near the Ascendant, the effects will become noticeable after one, two, three or four months. If the eclipse is near the Medium Coeli, we will notice the effects after five, six, seven or eight months. Should the eclipse be near the Descendant, we can expect effects to occur after nine, then eleven or even twelve months. Thus, being interested in the strong and immediate effects of the eclipse, we want to find out where in the world the Moon will be close to the Ascendant during the eclipse. Looking at the world map, we see that the line of angularity for this particular lunar eclipse runs through Asia. Taking Singapore to be representative (see chart above), we can see that Luna is conjunct the Ascendant and we can therefore conclude that the expected effects will take place immediately after the eclipse. Also immediately affected could be Russia, China, Thailand or Laos.

8 Oct 2014 Lunar eclipse map 2

We are also interested in the duration of the eclipse, and we find it to be 58 minutes. Lilly claims that the key to establishing the duration of a lunar eclipse’s effect is “one month for every hour”. Therefore we can conclude that this eclipse will initially affect people for just under one month. Having said that, this doesn’t give an insight into the possibility of long lasting consequences.

To give a summary of what we have established, we can conclude that the upcoming lunar eclipse will be rather a dangerous one, as it could herald the onset of some kind of disease, affecting many people in Asia. With the Sun in fall being heavily involved through his opposition to the Moon and through decanate rulership, and Mars, the lesser malefic, being the dispositor of the eclipsed Moon, this could be the trigger for a larger scale epidemic. We also note that Mars is conjunct fixed star Graffias in Scorpio, associated with malice and cruelty. William Lilly explains that, if Mars would be eclipse ruler:

“… he portends Tertaian Fevers, acute diseases, corruption of blood, or infirmities by breaking or stretching the veins, violence, injuries and injustice. … In the ayr he stirs up extraordinary sultry blasts and great heat, hot pestilent winds, pestiferous and infectious, thunder, lightning, whirl-winds, immeasurable droughts.”

For readers, interested in the personal implications of this eclipse, it might be of interest what William Lilly has to say about this:

“… Eclipse is more dangerous or pernitious which shall be in the Horoscope or Ascendant of the birth; or which shall be in the degree Ascending in an Annuall Revolution: it portends unto the Native some ominous and mischievous action as unto his body and also in his vital substance.”

And further on:

“… who had in the Radix of his Nativity either the Sun or the Moon in that degree, or in the degree opposite … or in the like degrees … which signs are in Quadrate aspects to the former, or if the degree Culminating in any man’s Nativity was either [the degree of the eclipse or its opposite or square] or within one degree therof, the native did suffer more or less by the influence of this Eclips; according to the signification of the House of Heaven, wherein the Sun or the Moon was in at the Birth, and was either well fortified or aspected of the benevolent Planets, or ill aspected, or afflicted of the Malevolents.”

For this particular lunar eclipse that means that people with Aries or Libra rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar Revolution for 2014, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore it should be noted if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point and it should be investigated if the Sun or Mars are particularly afflicted or located in houses six, eight, or twelve, as this might be of significance, too. If it should be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

Solar Eclipse 29 April 2014

On 29 April 2014, at 06:14:29 UT, there will be a rare non-central annular solar eclipse. The Sun and the Moon will be conjunct in 08*52 Taurus.

A partial eclipse will be visible within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, that includes the southern Indian Ocean, the southern edge of Indonesia and all of Australia.

This eclipse is part of Saros cycle 143, repeating every 18 years and 11 days, containing 72 events. The series started with partial solar eclipse on 7 March 1617.

The map below shows visibility and timing of the eclipse (time = UT):

The astrological chart, cast for Bangladesh, shows the event:

2014 Solar Eclipse Dhaka

In his Annus Tenebrosus, or the Dark Year, the famous 17th century astrologer William Lilly presents a method of eclipse delineation, including an interpretation of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses, occurring in each decanate of the Zodiac. As this solar eclipse takes place in the first decanate of Taurus, Lilly’s aphorism is as follows:

“afflicts such as are Negotiators, Solicitors, Agents, or are generally employed in men’s affairs, or in the publick; it compells men to undertake unnecessary business, it brings to nought, and confounds all factions undertaken by the former sort of men, and is suficciently hurtfull to corn”.

If we have a look at the eclipse’s path of angularity, we can see the following:

Solar Eclipse 2014 angularity map

The map above shows that the solar eclipse will be of quite immediate importance for parts of Africa, particularly Morocco, Mauritania, and the Ivory Coast. The eclipse point will be in the first decanate of Taurus, suggesting Venus to be the eclipse ruler. Venus is essentially dignified by exaltation in Pisces. William Lilly tells us about Venus being Lady of the Eclipse:

“… Venus generally in all things is like unto Jupiter, and produces such effects, with a certain kind of gracefulness; Peculiarly she gives renown unto men, honour, cheerfulness, … obedience and confirmity in Religion, … In the ayr she stirs up temperate blasts of wind, moyst and fructifying, no unpleasing weather or troublesome tempest. In rivers, it notes their gentle Inundation, and pretty swellings without harming any thing, not destructive or violently breaking forth …”

We can also see that the eclipse point is conjunct the Medium Coeli in Bangladesh, China and Russia. Our astrological chart above is cast for Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and the map segment below shows the event from a different perspective. We can expect Bangladesh to be affected four to five months after the actual eclipse date.

For readers, interested in the personal implications of this eclipse, it might be of interest what William Lilly has to say:

“… Eclipse is more dangerous or pernitious which shall be in the Horoscope or Ascendant of the birth; or which shall be in the degree Ascending in an Annuall Revolution: it portends unto the Native some ominous and mischievous action as unto his body and also in his vital substance.”

And further on:

For this particular Solar eclipse that means that people with Taurus rising or culminating, either in their birth chart or in their solar return chart for 2014/15, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore it should be noted if Sun or Moon are closely conjunct the Ascendant or Midheaven. Should it be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

Lunar Eclipse 15 April 2014

On 15 April 2014 at 07:43UT, there will be a total lunar eclipse. This eclipse is the 56th of Saros series number 122, which is composed of 75 eclipses. The duration of this lunar eclipse will be 1 hour, 17 minutes and 48 seconds.

The eclipse will be visible from both North and South America. Observers in the western Pacific miss the first half of the eclipse because it occurs before moonrise. Likewise most of Europe and Africa experience moonset just as the eclipse begins. None of the eclipse is visible from north/east Europe, eastern Africa, the Middle East or Central Asia.

The astrological chart below, cast for the location of Canberra, shows the event:

Lunar Eclipse April 2014 Canberra

In all lunar eclipses, we have to take into consideration two sensitive points, namely the placement of the Moon and that of the Sun, which are opposing each other. In this case the eclipsed Moon is located in Libra, and a look at the table of Essential Dignities and Debilities shows us that she is peregrine (that is, not essentially dignified).

The Sun is in the sign of Aries, wherein he is essentially dignified by sign rulership and exaltation . This basic information already provides us with important insights into the nature of the upcoming eclipse. We are able to predict that the energy of the eclipse will most likely be rather positive.

Venus is the dispositor of the eclipsed Moon in Libra. She is essentially dignified by exaltation. Jupiter, the ruler of the third decanate of Libra, is also essentially dignified by exaltation and very prominently placed near the MC. Here we have an involvement of both, the greater, and the lesser benefic, both of which are essentially dignified. We also notice that Luna is near the fixed star Spica and Jupiter is conjunct Sirius. (see detailed map below)

He writes in his Annus Tenebrosus, or The Dark Year, about a lunar eclipse with the Moon in the third decanate of Aries:

… some eminent and noted person dyes; the Religious swell in every Country, and raise seditions in the Courts of Princes ”

Thus, being interested in the strong and immediate effects of the eclipse, we want to find out where in the world the Moon will be close to the Ascendant during the eclipse. Looking at the world map, we see that the line of angularity for this particular lunar eclipse runs through Australia. Taking Canberra to be representative of Australia, we can see that Luna is close the Ascendant and we can therefore conclude that the expected effects will take place immediately after the eclipse.

Lunar Eclipse April 2014 map

We are also interested in the duration of the eclipse, and we find it to be one hour and 18 minutes. Lilly claims that the key to establishing the duration of a lunar eclipse’s effect is “one month for every hour”. Therefore we can conclude that this eclipse will affect us for just over one month.

To give a summary of what we have established, we can conclude that the upcoming lunar eclipse will be rather benign. Apart from Lilly’s prediction that somebody will die, we cannot find many negative pointers. This eclipse is ruled by Venus and Jupiter, which are accompanied by fortunate fixed stars. Spica conjunct Moon is interpreted to bring success, wealth and honour (particularly in connection with Mercury, Venus or Jupiter people). Sirius conjunct Jupiter promises business success, and ecclesiastical preferment, which is particularly of interest in connection with Lilly’s quote above. William Lilly writes about Venus, being eclipse ruler:

“… Venus generally in all things is like unto Jupiter, and produces such effects, with a certain kind of gracefulness; Peculiarly she gives renown unto men, honour, cheerfulness, … obedience and confirmity in Religion, … In the ayr she stirs up temperate blasts of wind, moyst and fructifying, no unpleasing weather or troublesome tempest …”

Solar Eclipse 03 November 2013

On 03 November 2013 at 12:59:48 UT, there will be an annular solar eclipse. The Sun and the Moon will be conjunct in 11:16 Scorpio. Astronomical information about this eclipse, according to Wikipedia:

[This eclipse] is a hybrid eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.0159. Totality will be visible from the northern Atlantic Ocean (east of Florida) to Africa (Gabon (landfall), R. Congo, DR Congo, Uganda), with the maximum of 1 minutes 39 seconds visible from the Atlantic Ocean south of Ivory Coast and Ghana.

It is a part of Saros cycle 143, repeating every 18 years, 11 days, containing 72 events. The series started with partial solar eclipse on March 7, 1617.

The map below shows visibility and timing of the eclipse (time = UT):

Solar Eclipse 3 November 2013 Washington

In his Annus Tenebrosus, or the Dark Year, the famous 17th century astrologer William Lilly presents a method of eclipse delineation, including an interpretation of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses, occurring in each decanate of the Zodiac. As this solar eclipse takes place in the second decanate of Scorpio, Lilly’s aphorism is as follows:

“it argues destruction to some certain king or person of worth and declares his mind averse to armies or wars”.

If we have a look at the eclipse’s path of angularity, we can see the following:

Solar Eclipse 03 November angularity

(click on map to enlarge)

The map above shows that the solar eclipse will be of quite immediate importance for the United States of America and for Mexico. The eclipse point will be in the second decanate of Scorpio, suggesting Mars and the Sun to be the eclipse rulers. Mars is strong in accidental dignity, being direct, swift, oriental and free of sunbeams. Looking at William Lilly’s prediction in Annus Tenebrosus, we find that the eclipse “argues destruction to some certain king or person of worth and declares his mind averse to armies or wars”. Mars is sextile the eclipse point and in the chart cast for Washington, displayed above, he is in the 10th house. Mundane astrology traditionally associates the 10th house with kings and rulers. In our times this obviously has to be adapted to signify the President of the United States.

In the chart, Mars is also conjunct the fixed star Zosma, ‘the girdle of the lion’, associated with selfishness, immorality and a tendency to calculatingly use other people. Lilly writes that Mars as eclipse ruler may “stir up wars, tumults and imprisonments”. He also causes kings and princes (the ruling elite) to commit acts of “tyranny, violence, injuries and injustice”. It may also cause violent storms at sea and “denote sudden and violent shipwrecks, by reason of inordinate blasts”. There is as well the possibility of the scarcity of grains and “all such things as produced out of the earth”.

We have already seen in the Libra ingress chart for the US, shown below,  (for more details, see my bog post about the possibility of US – lead airstrikes against Syria, here) that after 22 September, there is a heightened possibility of military action lead by the US. We also found though, that the public is strongly opposed to such a move, which may greatly influence the decisions made by the government. Looking at the information we gathered via the interpretation of the upcoming solar eclipse, it seems that the themes of conflict and warfare will still be very much at the forefront of the government’s agendas and plans.

Libra ingress 2013 Washington

We also notice that, in the eclipse chart, Mars is in mutual reception with Mercury by sign rulership. Mercury, located in the 12th house, is retrograde and combust. Mundanely speaking, the 12th house is associated with secret enemies of the country and spies. In the case of this solar eclipse, we are looking at potential problems with trade, commerce, but also ambassadors and secret enemies of the state.

For this particular Solar eclipse that means that people with Scorpio rising, either in their birth chart or in their solar return chart for 2013/14, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore it should be noted if Sun or Moon are closely conjunct the Ascendant, Descendant or Midheaven. Should it be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

The 2013 Eclipses and Traditional Astrology

Jessica Adams from The Astrology Show has published our recent Q&A interview on her website. We are covering a varied selection of topics, including my forecast of the upcoming solar and lunar eclipses, which some of my readers may find of interest.

The 2013 Eclipses and Traditional Astrology

Solar Eclipse 10 May 2013

On 10 May 2013 there will be an annular solar eclipse. The Sun and the Moon will be in 19° 31’ Taurus. Astronomical information about this eclipse can be found here:*

The astrological chart below, cast for New Delhi, shows the event.

10 May 2013 Solar Eclipse New Delhi

In his Annus Tenebrosus, or the Dark Year, the famous 17th century astrologer William Lilly presents a method of eclipse delineation, including an interpretation of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses, occurring in each decanate of the Zodiac. As this solar eclipse takes place in the second decanate of Taurus, Lilly’s aphorism is as follows:

“it shows innumerable difficulties and many discommodities to Travellers, and to such as bear children many abortions …”

The  Lady of the eclipse is Venus and the ruler of the second decanate of Taurus is the Moon. Venus is peregrine and under the sunbeams, indicating that she is not in particularly great shape at the moment. Nevertheless, Lilly describes Venus being the ruler of an eclipse to be

“the fore-runner of a quiet peacable time upon earth”

I would propose that the general theme of this solar eclipse is the renewed effort of women to make their voices heard, highlighting their struggle towards equality and independence.

Venus is conjunct the fixed star Alcyone, the brightest star of the Pleiades. Since time immemorial the Pleiades have been associated with occurrences or agendas which make people weep. Often a great struggle is connected with the conjunction of a planet to the Pleiades, and according to Diana Rosenberg’s Secrets of the Ancient Skies:

“there are usually many journeys, and there may be exile, banishment, alienation, evacuation or imprisonment … [but] Eridanus, the Great River, washes away the tears of the past, clearing the way for a bright new future.” (p 214f)

Having a closer look at the Moon, who, according to Lilly, signifies “all common people” but “especially all manner of women”, we notice that she is essentially dignified by exaltation, triplicity and face. Due to the nature of a solar eclipse, the Moon is cazimi (precisely conjunct the Sun, which is highly beneficial) and also eclipses the Sun. This can be interpreted as a highly symbolic gesture, indicating a push towards positive change to unfold.

If we have a look at the eclipse’s path of angularity, we can see the following:

10 May 2013 Solar Eclipse map 1

We can see from the map, that the line of angularity runs through Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. In all of these countries, women experience problems regarding freedom of speech, restriction of education, matters of equality, and so forth. It seems though that the upcoming solar eclipse could indicate a change for the better. As an example of  the possible events that may be occurring, this article and video clip about Afghans marching for women’s rights on Valentine’s day 2013, may suffice:

One Billion Rising

As for the USA, the map of angularity clearly shows that the line of conjunction between the eclipse point and the Descendant runs through parts of the United States. This suggests that the agenda of women’s rights in general and questions about  the relations between the USA and countries with issues concerning the discrimination of women will become of importance by the end of 2013.

“… who had in the Radix of his Nativity either the Sun or the Moon in that degree, or in the degree opposite … or in the like degrees … which signs are in Quadrate aspects to the former, or if the degree Culminating in any man’s Nativity was either [the degree of the eclipse or its opposite or square] or within one degree thereof, the native did suffer more or less by the influence of this Eclips; according to the signification of the House of Heaven, wherein the Sun or the Moon was in at the Birth, and was either well fortified or aspected of the benevolent Planets, or ill aspected, or afflicted of the Malevolents.”

For this particular Solar eclipse that means that people with Taurus or Scorpio rising, either in their birth chart or in their solar return chart for 2012/13, will feel the influence stronger than others.

Lunar Eclipse 25 April 2013

On 25 April 2013 at 19:57UT, there will be a partial lunar eclipse. This eclipse belongs to Saros series nr. 112, which was born on 20 May 1859 and will last until 12 July 2139.

The graphic below shows the visibility of this lunar eclipse.

Astrologically speaking, the Moon will be in 05° 45’ Scorpio, opposing the Sun in 05° 45’ Taurus. The eclipsed Moon will be conjunct Saturn and the Sun will be conjunct Mars. Furthermore Mars will be conjunct fixed star Sheratan and the Ascendant will be conjunct fixed star Zuben Elgenubi, the Southern Claw of the Scorpion.

The chart below, cast for the location of London, shows the event:

Lunar Eclipse April 2013

William Lilly tells us in his pamphlet on the judgment of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses:

“For when the place Eclipsed, or Eclipse itself, shall be in the Ascendant, the effects shall then begin in the 1, 2, 3, and 4. moneth next after the appearance of the Eclips, …”

To find out about the possible effects of this eclipse, we can turn to William Lilly again. He writes in his Annus Tenebrosus, or The Dark Year about a lunar eclipse with the Moon in the first Decanate of Scorpio, ruled by Mars:

“terrible Thunders, fearful Lightnings, many times Earthquakes, aboundance of destructive creatures in the waters.”.

Regular readers of my web log may also remember that I wrote in my article about the 2013 Aries ingress that, according to Bonatti, during the months after the Sun enters Aries,we could see “an abundance of waters or rains, and the increase of rivers and streams, and their flooding; the increase of cold.”

For more on the 2013 Aries Ingress, read my web log entry, here:

2013 Aries Ingress

A look at the map, showing the eclipse’s path of angularity, reveals that the Moon is close to the Ascendant during the eclipse in the region of the United Kingdom.

Lunar Eclipse April 2013 map(click on image to enlarge)

Mars is ruler of the first Decanate of Scorpio, who is also Ascendant ruler, and also tightly opposing the eclipsed Moon. He is therefore of major importance, playing a key role at the time of the lunar eclipse. We can as well see that retrograde Saturn is conjunct the Moon, which highlights that both, greater and lesser malefic, are involved in this lunar eclipse.

Lilly says about Mars being the governor of an eclipse:

“[h]ee generally is the cause of corruption … he stirs up Wars, Seditions, intestine risings and tumults, imprisonment, banishment, … popular tumults, … moreover he portends Tertian Feavers, acute diseases, corruption of blood … In the ayr he stirs up extraordinary soultry blasts and great heat, … thunder, lightning, whirl-winds, immeasurable droughts. … Usually he excites mens minds to great rashness and fool-hardiness.”

I have already mentioned that the Ascendant will be conjunct fixed star Zuben Elgenubi, the Southern Claw of the Scorpion. This is a malevolent star of the nature of Saturn and Mars and it is associated with misfortune, treachery and sickness.

Also Mars will be conjunct fixed star Sheratan, in the “left Horn of the Ram.” In keeping with the nature of Mars and Saturn, it is associated with violence. Danger can come to those who act in a reckless, impetuous or careless manner.

Diana Rosenberg writes in her excellent Secrets of the ancient Skies about the Arabic Manzil al-Sharatain and the fixed star Sheratan, which is this lunar mansion’s determinant:

“Al-Sharatain was said to produce “whirlwinds” (tornadoes?); these stars were transited … in 1991 when several twisters, … reamed “Tornado Alley” from Wichita, KS to Red Rock, OK; in 1935 when a Category 5 hurricane hit the Florida Keys, [and] in 1996: the Mt Everest disaster: climbers descending from the summit were caught in a storm.” (SAS vol1, p144)

To find out about the duration of the effects the Lunar eclipse may have, we can turn to Lilly once more:

[i]n an Eclipse of the Moon, so many hours as she is defective or suffers an Eclipse, so many moneths the Events thereby signified shall continue.”

In this case the lunar eclipse will last just over four hours and therefore we can expect the effects to last until the end of August 2013.

For this particular lunar eclipse that means that people with Scorpio or Taurus rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar return chart for 2013, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore it should be noted if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point. If it should be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

UPDATE: My colleague Helen Beers writes about her experiences regarding the eclipse here:

The Alchemical Crow and the Lunar Eclipse 25th April 2013

Lunar Eclipse 4 June 2012

On 4 June 2012, there will be a partial lunar eclipse. The Moon will be in 14*13’ Sagittarius, opposing the Sun in 14*13’ Gemini. The eclipsed Moon and the Sun will be forming a square to Mars in Virgo and to the Arabic Part of Fortune in Pisces. Furthermore, retrograde Venus will be combust.

The chart below, cast for Brussels, shows the event.

William Lilly reminds us in his pamphlet on the judgment of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses:

“For when the place Eclipsed, or Eclipse itself, shall be in the Ascendant, the effects shall then begin in the 1, 2, 3, and 4. moneth next after the appearance of the Eclips, …

A look at the map showing the path of angularity of the eclipse shows that the Moon is on the Ascendant during the eclipse in Hong Kong and Singapore. This means that an immediate effect of the eclipse may be expected in China and Malaysia.

To find out about the possible effects of this eclipse, let us have a look at what William Lilly has to say in his Annus Tenebrosus, or The Dark Year:

“Diseases rage against and amongst Horses, Mules, &c. the Seas troubled by Pyrats.”

Looking at the map of Europe, we can see the following picture emerging:

Here Mars of the eclipse chart is conjunct the Ascendent throughout Germany and Italy and is touching France and Norway. Mars, the lesser malefic is squaring the Sun/Moon axis, which indicates that these countries will be affected by the eclipse. This can be interpreted as a pointer towards the ongoing deepening of the eurozone crisis. It may as well be worth noting that London is not afflicted, making room for speculations that there may be a further distancing between Britain and the member states of the EU.

For this particular lunar eclipse that means that people with Sagittarius rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar return chart for 2012, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore it should be noted if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point. If it should be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

Solar Eclipse June 1st, 2011

On June, 1st 2011, at 21:02UT, there will be a partial solar eclipse. At this time Sun and Moon will be conjunct in 11*01′ Gemini, forming a separating trine aspect to Saturn as the chart below shows.

In his Annus Tenebrosus, or the Dark Year, William Lilly presents a method of eclipse delineation, including an interpretation of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses, occurring in each decanate of the Zodiac. As this solar eclipse takes place in the second decanate of Gemini, ruled by Mars who is at the same time the ruler of the first house, Lilly’s aphorism is as follows:

“much Piracy at Sea, and Murder, many fruitless treaties, many turbulent Petitions presented by the people to their Superiors.”

Lilly continues, explaining where to look to clarify the delineation:

“… For although it be most true, that the Planet who disposeth of the place of the Eclipse, shall mostly shew what manner or quality the effects shall be of, yet are they more or lesse, great or little, more forcible, or more restrained, according to the quality of that Planets existence and fortitude at time of the Eclips.”

In the case of this eclipse this would be Mercury in Taurus, indicating problems with intellectual issues brought onto the mundane level. The high-flying intellectual approach of Mercury is slowed down or even hampered trough him being peregrine, under the sunbeams and in close proximity to Algol. (In his book Fixed Stars & Constellations, Robson calls Algol the “most evil star in the heavens”, indicating misfortune, violence, mob violence and decapitation).

For this particular Solar eclipse that means that people with Gemini rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar return chart for 2011, will feel the influence stronger than others. If it should be the case that one or even both of these factors apply, an in -depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most .

Solar Eclipse

A total Solar eclipse will occur on Sunday, 11th July 2010. The chart shown below has been cast for the time of the eclipse in the UK:

William Lilly writes about eclipses in his work Annus Tenebrosus, published in 1652:

[A Solar eclipse occurring in Cancer, in the 2nd decanate]

“it dryes up Rivers and fountaines and intends much incontinency in man and women, and petulency, or ill offices amongst mortal man, viz. one cunningly thrusting another one out of his place”

In his Merlinus Anglicus of 1676, Lilly gave his opinion about Solar and Lunar eclipses:

“The Ancients do enjoyn us seriously to consider of present Solar and Lunar eclipses, and there is something therein to be considered; but in reality I declare, That nothing of that powerful efficacy ever apperared unto me as they have delivered and given caution of, I mean Eclipses operate not with that violence or so terribly as the Ancients have recorded and left in their Writings to Posterity, however they are with moderation to be handled; and the very truth is, they do rather work generally than particularly.”
