2016 An Astrological Preview

This is a general overview of astrological events occurring during the year 2016. Some of the events mentioned below may affect us globally or nationwide, whilst others may only affect us on an individual basis. For details about the nature, strength or duration of any effect that may take place, inception charts as well as natal charts of people in charge of the countries in question will also have to be taken into consideration. For events affecting the native on a personal level, natal-, solar return and other charts will have to be consulted. This should achieve an accurate judgment of the level of influence. In this astrological preview, the following information can be found:

Retrograde motion of the planets

Noteworthy sign ingresses and transits

Other noteworthy phenomena (Solstices, Equinoxes, Super Moons)

Solar and lunar eclipses

Solar ingress charts

Retrograde Motion

Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be retrograde at times during 2016.

Mercury Rx

will delight us, as usual, with interrupted communication, malfunction or complete failure of computers and other electronic devices and general uncertainty and confusion concerning any contracts, legal documents or agreements.

Mercury will be retrograde in  Aquarius/Capricorn between  6 January and 25 January, in Taurus between 29 April and 22 May, in Virgo between  31 August and 22 September, and in Capricorn/Sagittarius between 20 December and 8 January 2017.

Mars Rx

will bring a reduction of energy levels and new plans or projects will most likely be put on the back burner. Accidents and health problems are likely to affect natives who have Mars Rx transits to prominent planetary placements in the appropriate house of their birth chart.

Mars will be retrograde in Sagittarius/Scorpio between 18 April and 29 June.

Jupiter Rx

will remind us of his prudent side; with Jupiter’s help we are able to fulfil our potential but in his Rx phase, he demands that we obey the rules, follow our moral guidelines and show kindness and compassion.

Jupiter will be retrograde in Virgo between 9 January and 9 May. Retrograde Jupiter in Virgo brings a sober note to our search for inner truth. In this introspective time, we may realise that vanity, negligence and suppression of our emotional life are not helpful if we want to find our true self.

Saturn Rx

in Sagittarius will give us a chance to re-evaluate what has become static and dogmatic in the past. It is likely that any unfinished but forgotten business will make an unexpected reappearance during this time, reminding us to bring old issues to a close.

Saturn will be retrograde between 26 March and 13 August.

Solar and Lunar Eclipses

Solar Eclipses

Total solar eclipse on 9 March in 18* 56’ Pisces. This eclipse may be of immediate importance to Russia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. With Jupiter being eclipse ruler, countries falling under the planet’s rulership will have to be taken into consideration, too.

An eclipse usually affects only a small number of people. To establish the possibility of any effect to take place, the birth chart should be scrutinized for any of the following:

  • Sun or Moon are in or around 19* Pisces
  • Sun or Moon are in or around 19* Virgo (opposition)
  • Sun or Moon are in or around 19* Gemini or Sagittarius (square)
  • 19* Pisces is culminating in the birth chart (conjunct Midheaven)
  • 19* Pisces is ascending in the birth chart (conjunct Ascendant)

Should it be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the birth chart may be necessary to find out if, how and to what extent the native could be affected.

Annular solar eclipse on 1 September in 9*21’ Virgo. This eclipse may be of immediate importance to Brasil. Russia, Turkey, Irak and Saudi Arabia are likely to be affected at a later date. With Mercury being eclipse ruler, countries falling under the planet’s rulership will have to be taken into consideration, too.

To establish the possibility of any effect to take place, the birth chart should be scrutinized for any of the following:

  • Sun or Moon are in or around 9* Virgo
  • Sun or Moon are in or around 9* Pisces (opposition)
  • Sun or Moon are in or around 9* Sagittarius or Gemini (square)
  • 9* Virgo is culminating in the birth chart (conjunct Midheaven)
  • 9* Virgo is ascending in the birth chart (conjunct Ascendant)

Lunar Eclipses

Appulse lunar eclipse on 23 March, Moon in 3*17’ Libra, Sun in 3*17’ Aries. This eclipse may turn out to be of immediate importance to Russia and China. With Venus being eclipse ruler, countries falling under the planet’s rulership will have to be taken into consideration, too.

People with Libra or Aries rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar Revolution for 2016, could be more affected than others. Furthermore it should be investigated if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point. If it should be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

divider

Appulse lunar eclipse on 16 September, Moon in 24*20’ Virgo, Sun in 24*20’ Pisces. This eclipse may turn out to be of immediate importance to Senegal, Mauritania and the Canary Islands. Russia, Kazakhstan, India and Pakistan may be affected at a later date. With Jupiter being eclipse ruler, countries falling under the planet’s rulership will have to be taken into consideration, too.

People with Virgo or Pisces rising, either in their birth chart or in their Solar Revolution for 2016, could be more affected than others. Furthermore it should be investigated if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point.

Ingress Charts

2016 Solar Ingress for the United Kingdom

Aries Ingress London 2016

Shown here is the Aries ingress chart, cast for London, representing the United Kingdom. With a fixed sign rising, this chart will be valid for the whole of 2016. From the chart above, we can see that Mars will be the Lord of the Year. He is Lord of the 9th house,  and is prominently positioned near the 10th house cusp (MC). Main themes during this solar year will be matters concerning conflicts. Bonatti writes that Mars in the 10th house:

“… signifies wars and contentions over matters which do not belong to those who seek them, nor pertain to them” (BoA p951)

A detailed analysis of the Aries ingress chart will be posted on my web log in due course.

2016 Solar Ingress for the United States of America

Aries Ingress Wash 2016

Shown here is the Aries ingress chart, cast for Washington, which is representative for the United States of America. With a common sign rising, this chart is valid for six months. The Libra ingress chart will have to be taken into account thereafter. During this year, much attention will be paid to the election campaign which will result in the US Presidential Elections, held on 8 November. From the chart above, we can see that Mars will be Lord of the Revolution, which gives a first indication of what is to come.  Bonatti writes about Mars being Lord of the Revolution in the 1st house, that:

“… it signifies something horrible (and sorrow and fears, and contrarieties and contentions) is going to come to men …” (BoA p948)

A detailed analysis of the Aries and the Libra ingress charts for the United States, including a prediction regarding the next US president, will be posted on my web log in due course.

2016 Solar Ingress for Syria

Aries Ingress Damascus 2016

Shown here is the Aries ingress chart, cast for Damascus, which is representative for Syria. With a cardinal sign rising, this chart is valid for 3 months only, which already indicates the unstable situation in this country. Therefore the Cancer-, Libra- and Capricorn ingress charts will have to be taken into consideration, too. The Moon is Lady of the Revolution, highlighting the fact that the focus is on the common people of Syria. All other planets are in the problematic houses 6, 8 and 12, telling a tale of enemies, illness and death.

Saturn conjunct fixed star Dschubba

At the moment, Saturn is conjunct fixed star Dschubba, located in the head of the constellation Scorpius, the Scorpion. The conjunction between Saturn and this fixed star will re-occur in October 2015. Thereafter we will have to wait until November 2044 for a repeat performance.

Dschubba

According to Ptolemy, Dschubba is of the nature of Mars and Saturn. It can cause sudden assaults, malevolence, immorality and shamelessness. This star delta (δ) Dschubba, along with beta (β) Acrab, and pi (π) Scorpius, formed the Arabic 17th manzil al- Iklil, the Crown of the Forehead of the Scorpion.

Luna day off

Saturn, the Greater Malefic, is a cold, dry diurnal planet. He mainly represents sobriety, setbacks and restrictions. In conjunction with the fixed star Dschubba, it is believed to indicate violence, destructive inclinations, cruelty and immorality.

Apart from these rather unpleasant sounding possibilities, there also seems to be a rather interesting tendency towards foundation or recognition of cities, political entities or states. We know of a few events in the past that occurred when Saturn was close to fixed star Dschubba:

  • Saturn was at in head of the Scorpion at the Aries ingress of 814 BC, when the founding of Carthage took place.
  • During the 1958 establishment of the United Arab Republic, Saturn and Mars were in the head of the Scorpion.
  • The 1956 treaty, granting Morocco independence was signed when Saturn and North Lunar Node were in the head of the Scorpion.

2015 Aries Ingress of the Sun and UK General Election

On 7th May 2015 the next United Kingdom general election is to be held to elect the 56th Parliament of the United Kingdom. The leader of the Conservatives, who are the larger party in the current coalition government, is David Cameron. At present, he is the UK’s Prime Minister. In the following, I will try to predict if Cameron and his party will be successful in the upcoming election and if he will be able to defend his position as Prime Minister.

The chart below shows the Sun’s Aries ingress for 2015:
Aries Ingress 2015 London

With a fixed sign rising, this chart will be valid for the whole of 2015.

From the chart above, we can see that Mercury will be Lord of the Year. Being Lord of the 10th house, he is prominently positioned near the 4th house cusp. He is also debilitated by detriment and fall and square Saturn, the greater malefic. Main themes during this solar year will be matters concerning communal finances and business in general. The ingress chart shows that debilitated Mercury is squaring Saturn in the 1st house. This indicates more financial restrictions and continued economic hardship for most of the population. All of this doesn’t come as a surprise to anybody who followed the news during the last five years, but it doesn’t indicate in any way who the UK’s next Prime Minister will be. To find out about this, we have to look closely into techniques of traditional astrology. All of the passages quoted below were conceived and recorded long before concepts like ‘constitutional monarchy’ or ‘Prime Minister’ were invented. For this reason, we have to be flexible and think of the ‘king’ as the person in charge, rather than the monarch.

In the Aries ingress chart, the Sun is significator of the king, according to Bonatti, who says to look to

“… the Lord of the Year, and the Lord of the 10th, and to the Sun: and the one of them you find stronger, or less weak, or better disposed, or less bad, … make this the significator of the King.” (BA, p833)*

The Sun is exalted in Aries, which suggests (at least temporary) strength. We know that, traditionally, exaltation is compared to a king on his throne, and we have to remember that Lilly thought it to present “a person of haughty condition, assuming more to him than his due” (CA p102). But we also have to take into consideration that a solar eclipse was taking place only hours before the Aries ingress.

Solar Eclipse London March 2015

Seeing the election process as a ‘pilgrimage’ (another traditional concept we have to modernise), we can say that with the Sun located in the 4th house, according to Bonatti:

“… his journey will be horrible and fearful. And because it will be in the eights from his own house, it is feared concerning his death.” (BA, p867).

Knowing that Cameron’s position as Prime Minister is at stake, this statement doesn’t come as a surprise either. It has been widely stated in the media that the outcome of this election is one of the most unpredictable in recent history. Still, this observation alone is not enough to predict the outcome.

Another traditional astrologer whose work can be of help in our quest is Masha’allah. In his Revolutions of the Year of the World, he writes:

“… if the significator of the king was not in charge, … the enemy will be from the same clime, but the king will be weakened, and another will be led into his place.” (AoW, p110)**

What he means is that we have to look at the planet who is Lord of the Year and compare its strength to the planet representing the king. Mercury, who is Lord of the Year, is essentially debilitated by detriment and fall, as compared to the Sun, who is essentially dignified by exaltation. Therefore we can argue that the king will not be weakened and it is unlikely that anybody else (i.e. another ruler) will take over his position.

Another way of looking at this is via the accession chart. We know that David Cameron became Prime Minister on 11 May 2010. The Aries ingress chart for this year is shown below:

Aries Ingress chart 2010

Reading with the astrologer al-Rijal, in The Book of the Skilled, we find:

“And if the Sun was separating from Jupiter and connected with Mars, [and] then connected with Saturn before he goes out of the sign in which he is, it indicates that a man of the people of the house of the acceder, or of his own rank will rise up against him and he will suffer grief from that – then he will be victorious over him.” (AoW, p449)

With this final judgment taken into consideration, it seems highly likely that David Cameron will continue to be the UK’s Prime Minister after the election in May 2015.

Ingress Charts

2014 Solar Ingress for the United Kingdom

Shown here is the Aries ingress chart, cast for London, representing the United Kingdom. With a common or mutable sign rising, this chart will be valid for six months. Thereafter, the Libra ingress chart will have to be taken into account.

Solar Ingress 2014 London

From the chart above, we can see that Jupiter will be the Lord of the Revolution*, valid until the onset of the Libra ingress. Jupiter is prominently positioned in the 10th house, and essentially dignified by exaltation. He is also the Planetary Hour ruler and strongest planet in the chart (Almuten Figuris).

Main themes between March and September will be matters concerning communal finances and business in general. The ingress chart shows that Jupiter is squaring the Sun and also shows a strongly debilitated Mercury. This indicates more financial restrictions and continued economic hardship for most of the population. The Moon, representing the common people, is conjunct the Greater Malefic Saturn, which is telling.

A detailed analysis of the Aries and Libra ingress charts will be posted on my web log in due course.

2014 Solar Ingress for the United States of America

Shown here is the Aries ingress chart, cast for Washington, which is representative for the United States of America. With a cardinal sign rising, this chart is valid for three months only. The Cancer -, Libra- and Capricorn ingress charts will have to be taken into account thereafter.

Aries Ingress 2104 Washington

Once again we see that Jupiter will be Lord of the Revolution*, but here he is located on the first house cusp. Jupiter is squaring the Sun, located on the 10th house cusp. This indicates that, just like in the chart cast for Europe, that the emphasis will be on business affairs and the economy. With debilitated Mercury in the 9th house, foreign affairs may become of importance, too.

A detailed analysis of the Aries and the Libra ingress charts for the United States will be posted on my web log in due course.

*Footnote, answering the repeatedly asked question why Jupiter is called the Lord of the Revolution.

The concept behind the judgment of ingress charts is as follows. Astrologically speaking, each new year begins at the moment the Sun passes 00 degrees Aries.  An astrological chart cast for this moment is called the Aries ingress chart, or the chart of the Solar Revolution. Depending on the zodiac sign on the Ascendant of this chart (also called rising sign), it is possible that the Aries ingress chart is valid for three, six, or twelve months. If the Aries ingress chart is valid for the next twelve month, the astrologer can follow certain rules and establish which planet will be what is called Lord or Lady of the Year. If the Aries ingress chart shows that it will be necessary to cast another ingress chart after three or six months, the individual rulers of the ingress charts, established by the astrologer, are called Lord or Lady of the Revolution (meaning the Revolution of the World Year). The nature of this planet, its position, strength, aspects, and so forth have to be judged to predict the mundane situation during the period in question of each individual country.

US – lead Airstrikes Against Syria?

Solar ingress 2013 Syria

According to the rules of traditional astrology, judging the 2013 Aries ingress chart for Syria we find that the Sun is Lord of the Year and also significator of the king. The ingress chart has Leo, a fixed sign, on the Ascendant. Therefore the chart will be valid for the whole of the solar year.

We also note that the Sun is in a square aspect to the Moon in the 12th house, which is aptly signifying the common people. We can furthermore deduct that the square aspect adequately represents the state of affairs, i.e. the civil war currently taking place in Syria. To find out about the possibility of Syria getting dragged into a war against a foreign enemy, we have to investigate further. Traditionally, Mars is the natural significator of war in a Revolution. Bonatti tells us about the likelihood of war breaking out that, if Mars were to be cadent:

“it does not signify it.” (BA p896).

Bonatti also suggests that the planet Mars is separating from by aspect would be the instigator of the war. We know that Mars can only separate from either Jupiter or Saturn, reason being that these are the only two planets who are moving slower than Mars. Investigating this possibility in our ingress chart, we find that Mars is neither separating from an aspect to Jupiter nor to Saturn. This can be interpreted as another indicator against the possibility of a full blown war, waged against a foreign force, breaking out.

But let’s now have a look at the other half of this equation, the Aries ingress chart of the United States of America.

Aries ingress 2013 Washington

We wrote about this ingress chart earlier in the year, noting that the chart would only be valid until the Libra ingress, on 22 September 2013. We basically came to the conclusion that the Lady of the Revolution was the Moon, in the 4th house, indicating that the main themes for the first half of the year would be internal domestic issues, people’s resources, and so forth.

Libra ingress 2013 Washington

Looking at the Libra ingress chart, the picture changes. Here we find Aquarius on the Ascendant and the sign ruler Saturn, the Greater Malefic, conjunct the Moon’s North Node. Mars, natural significator of war is aptly located in the 7th house, which, according to traditional astrologers, like Lilly or Partridge, has also to be taken into consideration. Thinking of Bonatti’s rule again, we can now say that Mars is located in an angle, which signifies war. Mars is separating from a square to Saturn, and here we find in Bonatti:

“And if Saturn were to rule the … quarter, there will be war by seduction and cleverness, and through knowledge and skills” (BA 897).

And later on:

“And if he [Mars] were separated from Saturn (since Saturn in such a case signifies kings), it seems that the king [i.e. head of state] is the one who has incited the war, or it will be due to the advice of old and ignoble men.” (BA 894).

Adding to this is the fact that the Moon, signifying the common people, is opposed to Saturn, squaring Mars and conjunct the Moon’s South Node. This clearly shows that a large part of the population is not in agreement with the plans of the government or the head of state.

All in all it seems that there is a likelihood of one or perhaps more single sided strikes against Syria, which will probably take place after 22 of September, when the Sun will have moved into Libra.

The chart below shows  the monthly profections of Mars and the Sun for September 2013 in the ingress chart for Syria. It clearly shows that both profected planets will be activated by Saturn in the revolution chart, which doesn’t bode well.

The yellow segment shows the path of the Sun and the red segment the path of Mars throughout the monthly profection in question. The inner ring shows the planets of the ingress chart. *

Lunar Eclipse June 15th, 2011

On June, 15th 2011, at 20:13UT, there will be a total lunar eclipse. At this time the Moon will be in 24* 23′ Sagittarius, exactly opposite the Sun in 24*23’ Gemini as the chart below, cast for London, shows:

One can immediately recognise that the Moon is conjunct the Ascendant, which makes this a significant eclipse for London and with it for the whole of the United Kingdom. The map below shows the eclipse’s line of angularity:

William Lilly writes in his pamphlet on the judgment of the effects of solar and lunar eclipses:

For when the place Eclipsed, or Eclipse itself, shall be in the Ascendant, the effects shall then begin in the 1, 2, 3, and 4. moneth next after the appearance of the Eclips, but its greatest vigour, and most material accidents designed from that Eclips, shall shew themselves in the first third part of time allotted to the universall Duration thereof.

Furthermore it has to be noticed that in his Christian Astrology, Lilly notes that London is coming under the rulership of Gemini. Looking at the eclipse chart one will notice that the Sun is in Gemini, opposite the eclipsed Moon in Sagittarius.

Comparing the eclipse chart (inner wheel) with the Aries ingress chart for 2011 (outer wheel), one can see the ingress chart’s Nodes of the Moon are close to the ASC/DC axis.

In his highly recommended book The Cryptic Cycle, Murray Beauchamp writes about the significance of the nodes:

By themselves, the Nodes of the Moon can indicate some powerful forces at work if found in close aspect between charts. Their action can be iconoclastic; not that this should surprise us at all, because during the eclipse season they are truly activated. Node-to-Node aspects (conjunction, square and opposition) are an important indicator of a powerful activation of the lunar saros.

Looking at the birth chart of this eclipse cycle, which is saros #130, from June 10th 1416, 11:56 LMT (outer wheel) together with the chart of the forthcoming eclipse in June 2011 (inner wheel), we can see the important angularity of the Nodes of the Moon in both charts. Both charts are cast for London.

William Lilly’s aphorism for a lunar eclipse in Sagittarius is as follows:

A Plague followes, and great evils afflicted all mankind, Consumptions, more than ordinaire.

Jupiter, being Lord of the eclipse, is located in the fourth house of the eclipse chart, indicating that this eclipse might be concerned with fourth house matters in the wider sense. The astrologer Richard Saunders, who was hailed by Lilly, does indeed attribute the plague with Jupiter.

It might as well be noteworthy that the eclipsed Moon and Jupiter are in mutual reception by triplicity and that the Moon is furthemore forming an applying trine to Jupiter.
