Welcome to the Information Age – The Great Conjunction of 2020 and its Future Implications

On 21 December 2020, there will be a conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn, which is also known as a Great Conjunction. A conjunction between these two slow moving planets is a relatively rare event in itself, but the 2020 event is even rarer, as will be explained shortly.

Jupiter’s annual motion is about 30˚ and Saturn moves about 12˚ per year. Leaving a difference of approximately 18˚ per year, we can work out that Jupiter will perfect a conjunction with Saturn roughly every 20 years. This also means that each conjunction will take place 240˚, or eight signs, further along the zodiac. Were these figures to be exact, the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions would always take place in one of the three signs of the same element. But this is not the case. The exact duration between two conjunctions is 19.8 years, which means that, over time, the place of conjunction moves backwards through each sign. And so, after about 200 years one cycle of conjunctions in the signs of one particular element comes to an end and another cycle of conjunctions in signs of the following element begins. This seems to be a long time to comprehend, but there is still another, larger cycle to be observed. After about 800 years the conjunctions have taken place in the signs of all four elements and another, new, 800 year cycle begins.

Having established the general patterns of the Great Conjunction, with its 20, 200, and 800 year cycles, we can now begin to look at the finer details. The last Great Conjunction occurred in 2000 when Jupiter and Saturn were conjunct in Taurus. It was the last conjunction in an Earth sign, in a cycle that began back in 1802. Between 2020 and 2140 all Great Conjunctions will take place in Air signs, beginning with Aquarius. The sequence will be as follows:

21 December 2020 0 Aquarius 29

31 October 2040 17 Libra 55

7 April 2060 0 Gemini 46

15 March 2080 11 Aquarius 52

18 September 2100 25 Libra 32

16 July 2119 14 Gemini 51

14 January 2140 17 Aquarius 04

This will be followed by one Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in 7 Scorpio 58, on 21 December 2159. Thereafter, there will be another two Great Conjunctions in Gemini and Aquarius respectively, before a new cycle of conjunctions in Water signs will begin in 2219.

The chart below, cast for London, shows the 2020 Jupiter/Saturn conjunction:

This Great Conjunction is taking place in the first decanate of the fixed Air sign Aquarius, wherein Saturn, the greater malefic is domicile ruler. We can see that in the chart cast for London, Jupiter and Saturn are tightly conjunct the Descendant (and therefore also opposing the Ascendant). This angularity strongly indicates that the conjunction will be particularly potent for the United Kingdom. Another glance at the chart also shows that the lesser malefic, Mars, is prominently located in the 10th house, in Aries, the sign he has rulership over. In mundane astrology, the 10th house governs the monarch or president, the government and people in authority, as well as national trade. Mars governs the military, soldiers, war, terrorist attacks, and conflicts.

It is also of importance to realise that the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction will occur at the same time as the Sun’s ingress into Capricorn, commonly known as the Winter Solstice. Due to the Ascendant of the UK’s Aries ingress chart being in Virgo, the Capricorn ingress chart is also of vital interest and of great importance for the judgment of the the UK’s state of affairs during the last quarter of the solar year. Aquarius, the sign wherein the Great Conjunction will take place, and Capricorn, the other sign Saturn has rulership over, are opposing Cancer and Leo, which are the domiciles of the Moon and the Sun respectively. For this reason, it seems only natural to also look at the Solar eclipse that took place on 21 June 2020 and its effects. I have already discussed the possible effects of this eclipse for India and China, which tie in with problems related to the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction, in my blog post from 12 June 2020. The blog entry can be read HERE.

All of what has been said so far shows that the transition into what some may think of as the Age of Aquarius is not likely to be a smooth one. Aquarius has often been described as being representative of the archetypal innovative humanitarian. This may be so, but let us remind ourselves of the astrological basics which will heighten our understanding of what we may experience during the next 20 years and beyond. Taurus, the sign wherein the last Great Conjunction took place, is an Earth sign. Just like Virgo and Capricorn, the other two signs of the Earth triplicity, Taurus displays a particular focus on functionality and practical action. Solidity, pragmatism, and high levels of organisation are also typical for Earth signs. Aquarius, on the other hand, as an Air sign, displays high levels of fluidity and dynamic expression. Sociability, relentless communication, and intellectual curiosity are typical for Air signs. Furthermore, to highlight another division, Taurus is a feminine, nocturnal sign. Its core agendas are security and preservation of the status quo. Aquarius is one of the masculine, diurnal signs. Unlike the feminine, nocturnal signs, masculine, diurnal signs are expansive and naturally expressive. Their core agendas are those of action and movement. It may also be of interest to the reader what the 2nd century Hellenistic astrologer Vettius Valens has to say about Aquarius:

“Aquarius is the celestial sign which is masculine, solid, anthropomorphic, somewhat damp, single. It is mute, quite cold, free, upward-trending, feminizing, unchanging, base, with few offspring, the cause of troubles arising from athletic training, carrying burdens, or work in hard materials, an artisan, public. Men born under this sign are malicious, haters of their own families, incorrigible, self-willed, deceitful, tricky, concealing everything, misanthropic, godless, accusers, betrayers of reputations and the truth, envious, petty, occasionally generous (because of flow of water), uncontrollable. As a whole this sign is wet. By part it is as follows: the first parts are wet, the upper parts fiery, the lower worthless and useless.” (Vettius Valens, Anthologies, Book I)

Furthermore, both, Taurus and Aquarius are fixed signs. The 17th century astrologer William Ramesey writes in his Astrology Restored, that if Great Conjunctions occur “… in fixed signs, what they portend … is of continuance.” (p491)

To gain a better understanding about the nature of events that can be expected to be triggered by the upcoming Jupiter/Saturn conjunction, it may be of benefit to have another look at Ramesey’s Astrology Restored, wherein he writes:

“ … when these two highest planets are in conjunction in the fiery trigon … many commotions, wars, seditions, troubles, subversion of monarchies, kingdoms, states, alteration of laws, customs, privileges and rights, plagues, famine, desolation, anxiety and trouble, treason, treacheries, and the death of kings, nobles, princes, emperors and powers follow. So likewise when they are in conjunction in the first term of any trigon, … but not so forcible is their then effects, nor so terrible as the former, yet (though in a less degree) the forerunners and occasioners of grievous mutations and accidents, according to the nature of that planet which has most power of the two in the sign wherein they are joined; for if Saturn be stronger than Jupiter, it will be very terrible …in fiery, earthy and airy signs they cause draught and a scarcity of provisions, and barrenness of the ground, pestilence and famine. Also when these two first conjunctions are in any of the angles, … it denotes the arise of some new king or prophet … “ (p492, emphasis mine)

From what we have read above, we can deduct the likelihood of major change to take place. In the long run the old, highly organised and well structured, but conservative and pragmatic forces symbolised by Saturn are likely to be replaced with new ideas based on humanitarian principles. In other words the old, established political, financial, and most likely also social structures all of us have grown up with and have learnt to accept to be taken for granted are likely to be replaced. This will not happen over night and also not without a lot of resistance though, as the prominence and strength of Saturn in the Great Conjunction charts testifies.

New technology in its widest sense is probably to be found at the basis of some of these changes. A good example to think of is the continuing increase of (free) information available on-line. We are currently flooded with online information to the extent that one could get the impression we are entering a new era I am inclined to be the ‘Information Age’. For some people, this may be a great opportunity to enhance their level of education or make use of specialist resources. These have until recently only been available to academics who had to visit brick and mortar libraries or even had to travel to other countries to find the information they needed. But there are also downsides to this trend. These are, for example, the increase in distribution of unchecked, not peer-reviewed, or just downright false information, or the deliberate publication of what has become known as ‘fake news’. In short, unless a higher degree of responsibility, morality, or even the implementation of plain ethics will become mainstream and will be adhered to by the majority of people, these problems will stay with us.

Also, to give another example, there is already a noticeable shift in people’s working habits. The widespread availability of high speed broadband, together with the use of advanced conferencing tools, makes it possible to work from home for extended periods of time. Teaching children via online classes, rather than actually meetings them in classrooms everyday is also something that springs to mind. If continuing, this trend will eventually have an impact on a wide range of issues, like the reduction of air pollution due to reduced number of people travelling to and from work, less non-renewable resources used in office buildings, reduction of carbon footprint, and so forth. Hopefully this will solve some of the environmental issues we are currently facing.

There is also the possibility of new financial concepts being introduced. Universal Basic Income, springs to mind, which, in the spirit of Aquarius, could be a great stepping stone towards higher levels of social justice. Although already discussed by politicians, change seems to be still a long way away. This brings us back to the fact that Saturn is domicile ruler of Aquarius, telling us that the transition to Aquarian principles will not happen overnight and that we will have to deal with the rather harsh effects of the Great Conjunction first.

Saturn conjunct fixed star Dschubba

At the moment, Saturn is conjunct fixed star Dschubba, located in the head of the constellation Scorpius, the Scorpion. The conjunction between Saturn and this fixed star will re-occur in October 2015. Thereafter we will have to wait until November 2044 for a repeat performance.

Dschubba

According to Ptolemy, Dschubba is of the nature of Mars and Saturn. It can cause sudden assaults, malevolence, immorality and shamelessness. This star delta (δ) Dschubba, along with beta (β) Acrab, and pi (π) Scorpius, formed the Arabic 17th manzil al- Iklil, the Crown of the Forehead of the Scorpion.

Luna day off

Saturn, the Greater Malefic, is a cold, dry diurnal planet. He mainly represents sobriety, setbacks and restrictions. In conjunction with the fixed star Dschubba, it is believed to indicate violence, destructive inclinations, cruelty and immorality.

Apart from these rather unpleasant sounding possibilities, there also seems to be a rather interesting tendency towards foundation or recognition of cities, political entities or states. We know of a few events in the past that occurred when Saturn was close to fixed star Dschubba:

  • Saturn was at in head of the Scorpion at the Aries ingress of 814 BC, when the founding of Carthage took place.
  • During the 1958 establishment of the United Arab Republic, Saturn and Mars were in the head of the Scorpion.
  • The 1956 treaty, granting Morocco independence was signed when Saturn and North Lunar Node were in the head of the Scorpion.

Rensberger’s Planetary Aspects – Squares

Squares:

 Saturn:

 Saturn square Jupiter:

If there is a square aspect with Saturn above and to the right hand and Jupiter to the left hand, dangerous aspects of life will be signified. The amount of the paternal heritance will be diminished, all advice will be turned on its head, property will be lost, deeds will be reduced, and the senses will be dulled by vain perjuries of the mind. [They will also] plague their parents with all kinds of vileness.

But if Jupiter is above and to the right, and will aspect Saturn on the left, bad luck and the aforementioned misery and hardship will be diminished. And the parents will be elevated with the light of aristocracy, and the native will be receiving all kinds of basic necessities, according to his standing.

Saturn square Mars:

If Saturn is to the right of Mars, and Mars on the left of the square, the native’s plans will be prevented, and he will be unable to carry out duties. [There will be] all kinds of illnesses, and cold, and heat mixed into it, which will rattle the body, with shakes, that it will make one shudder. [He will] waste his paternal inheritance, and will cause the death of his brothers. But if Mars is on top, and will look at Saturn, who is to the left of the square, it indicates the sudden death of mother and father. But all deeds will be carried out with luck and [the native] will be hard working at all times. And once the problem of former nastiness has been overcome, he will not fail and be empty handed. He will not waste his paternal inheritance and not [sic] add to it through hard work. And his housemates will lie to him and shout.

Saturn square Sun:

If the Sun is to the left of Saturn, looked at with good rays, and Saturn will be highest, it will weaken the strength reported above. And it will bring loss of dignity, with cruel fall. It will cause the body to be misshapen, with constant spasms and hardening of the veins. And his parents will suffer from the same diseases and illnesses. And it means that the native’s father will die earlier than the mother, and that the native will be a burden to his parents. He will be hardened by harmful conversations and visitations, and nasty diseases with cold moisture, run together and congealed, will destroy all he did. Also the father’s inheritance.

But if the Sun is on top and will look at Saturn in the left square, it will bring strong hostility between the people in the house, and will make it impossible that the native’s intentions will come to a good end. And in early age, it will bring heavy damage, illness and weakness of the body, with many nasty diseases.

Saturn square Venus:

If Saturn is to the right of the square, and looking at Venus to the left, positioned with threatening and terrible rays, the paternal inheritance will be lost, and the heavy burden of poverty. And women or wives will suffer much sorrow and misery and they will not be graced with the pleasure of beauty. All the native’s hopes will be in vein.

But if Venus is on top, to the right of Saturn, wives will be honest and virtuous and will want to be lord and master in the husband’s house. They will always love their husband with honest disposition, but they will keep their love secret and concealed.

Saturn square Mercury:

If Saturn is on top, at the right hand of the square, it signifies a deadly affliction from the day of birth. [It] destroys the opinion of the wise councilors, and forces the native to subjugate to a foreign power or authority. He will suffer from the disadvantage of envy, and makes it difficult for some to speak, some will not be able to pronounce properly, some will have problems with their ears, making them hard of hearing or deaf. It may be that Mars will have an effect, diminished by the presence of benevolent planets.

But if Mercury is on top, and on the right side, and will look at Saturn, who is to the left, it will not show much good, but perhaps the nastiness of the square mentioned above will be diminished.

Saturn square Moon:

If Saturn is on top, to the right side of the square, and the Moon is below, to the left, it renders the native’s body [?lucklet?] with nasty moisture and breaks the movement of the mind with foul depression or frustration. And makes him unfit to do anything, and he will waste his maternal property or inheritance with quarrels in court against the mother.

But if the Moon is on top of the square, to the right, the mother will die a pitiful death and she will be haunted by danger and nasty diseases out of evil moistures, disruption of marriage, constant quarrel with the wife, and will take away the goodwill of friends and folk.

 Jupiter:

Jupiter square Mars:

If Jupiter is brighter than Mars, it shows that the native’s abilities will be acknowledged by the kings, [he will be] steadfast in his deeds and actions, and will make profit out of them. Nevertheless, it will be damaging for the sons and paternal inheritance.

But if Mars is to the right of the square and higher than Jupiter, it means that that the native will have a hard live full of work, the kings will not deal with him, and [there will be] much trouble at court.

Jupiter square Sun:

If the Sun is on top and to the right and will aspect Jupiter to the left of the square, it indicates the noble line of the father, but separation from the paternal inheritance. [He] will move away from his place of birth, the neighbours will hate him.

But if Jupiter is on top, and the Sun to the left side, [he], as well as his father, will be winners, and others will think he was miraculous.

Jupiter square Venus:

If Jupiter is on top and to the right of the square, and Venus will look at him from the left, indicates usefulness, or, concerning women, shows that he will be faithful, and pious, and honest, and righteous.

But if Jupiter is lower than Venus, and to the left hand of the square of Venus, so they say he will be a womanizer, who will be cheated on many times, because of the lure of women, he will look for and invent bodily pleasure. If he should start something, and things are about to change, or his circumstances chould change, he will always destroy the outcome.

Jupiter square Mercury:

If Mercury is to the right and higher than Jupiter, it shows the native’s wisdom, who will specialize in predictions, solving [of problems], and he will learn geometry, mathematics, and prediction of the heavens. [He] will be pious, and will undertake many things, will give to others, and [?milrigkeit?] of others.

But if Mercury should is higher, to the right of the square, he will have many labourers, he will be well off, and because of his good nature, he will receive some dignity.

Jupiter square Moon:

If Jupiter is to the right and on top in a nocturnal birth, the native will have a good name and reputation, and will be honest.

But if Mars is on top, it promises much luck, [makes one] commendable, and can make the native pleasant to dukes and kings. But this kind of luck will not last as there will be times of damage to the paternal heritage. Sometimes it can diminish the joy of dignity, attracts damage, and indicates that the native may be lazy.

Mars:

Mars square Sun:

If the Sun is on top, it indicates much trouble, waste of property, bad luck and an evil face.

But if Mars is on top, it will be worse. But in a diurnal birth, they will be stronger, particularly if the aspect is in the Ascendant. If Mars is in the descendant, or in the 10th [house] receiving the light of the waxing Moon, he will be publicly judged or punished. Similar can be expected for nocturnal births.

Mars square Venus:

If Mars is in the 10th [house], it indicates hard work concerning women. If Mars is in a moveable sign, the native will be inconsistent in his business, [he] will marry a bad woman or a wench. In a female nativity, it shows that she will be a wench

But if Venus is in the 10th [house], she will be ashamed of her deeds, and will keep secret what she committed with bad consciousness, and will hide what she did in her unashamed desire.

Mars square Mercury:

If Mars is to the right and on top, such a configuration and placement of the planets will be cause of all evil and bad luck. It is detrimental to the native, and indicates nasty illnesses, puts him in the guardhouse or prison, makes him guilty of cruel allegations and accusations. All of this will be worth in a diurnal birth. In the nocturnal [birth] it will be diminished to some degree.

But if Mercury is higher, it indicates that it will make evil, nasty and cunning people, equipped with the most evil desire of the mind, dealer in and receiver of stolen goods. [It] sends the native to prison, and they are constantly on the outlook for a place and property where they can live their evil ways.

Mars square Moon:

If Mars is to the right and on top, it indicates that the mother will become a widow, or that she will die of weakness, because of blood flow. And it will indicate a beggar and an evil death. If Mars is in the limits of Saturn, and the Moon in the limits of Mercury, or Mars, as long as his soul will remain in his body, he will give power to the evil spirits to rule over it [i.e. the soul].

But if the Moon is on top, it indicates ignoble, hard working or laboring, subservient people, who are not good at anything. [It also] shows that the mother will be of a scorned house, and amidst all misery and squalor, it shows arrogant wives.

 Sun:

Sun square Moon:

If she is angular, and the Sun in any square, it denotes dignity and honour, and power of office. If beneficial planets are looking at them, it will be even better. But if malefic planets are looking at them, it means a dangerous life, and danger of bad luck. Still, if the Moon is full and applying to Jupiter, or Jupiter will receive the conjunction of the waxing Moon, it indicates great joy of nobility, with envy.

But if the Moon is separating from Jupiter, the nastiness of the malefic planets will increase.

Venus:

Venus square Mercury:

Although it rarely happens, it creates an artist of subtle mastery, and a glorious human being, or a magister of some great discipline or teaching, but a loose woman, or because of women.

Venus square Moon:

If the Moon will be in top position, and Venus will be to her left, it indicates a great increase in money, but damage from women, or humiliation.

But if Venus is on top, she will make the native very happy, graces one’s life with happiness, and, by the deeds of one’s wife, creates invulnerable love. [It] makes good sons, full of happiness and lovely words, and affection. But the mother will be a cheat. The native will come across honest and happy wives.

Mercury:

Mercury square Moon:

If Mercury will be on top, it shows wisdom, graceful speech, but at times danger of riots.

If aspected by malefic planets, and the Moon will be opposite Mars, or in square [aspect], it indicates that he will be accused of false deals, and he will be caught, or detained, or slung in ordinary prison and kept imprisoned.

But if the Moon is on top, then the native will be unsteady, also, that they will oppose the advice of their own mind.

2014 Libra Ingress of the Sun for the UK & the USA

On 23rd September 2014 at 02:29UT, the Sun will enter the sign of Libra. As stated in my earlier post about the 2014 Aries ingress (read it here), the ingress charts for the United Kingdom and the United States of America will have to be updated at the time the Sun enters Libra.

United Kingdom

Beginning with the United Kingdom, we see the Libra Ingress chart below:

2014 Libra Ingress London

We remember that Jupiter was the Lord of the Revolution in the 2014 Aries ingress chart. After six months, things have changed and we can see from the chart above that Saturn has now taken over from Jupiter. He will be Lord of the Revolution, or chart ruler, for the next six months.  Although Saturn is generally regarded as the Greater Malefic, he can, under certain circumstances, act in a benefic way. As seen in the chart above, although being peregrine, Saturn is otherwise accidentally well dignified. Saturn being in good condition, Bonatti tells us, signifies:

“… that the rustics will obey their masters or kings and will be humble to them; and the empire or kingdom will be raised up … and its fame and name will be increased.” (Bonatti*, BA p919)

We can also see that Jupiter is squaring Saturn, of which Bonatti tells us that it will:

…  break and abolish half of Saturn’s malice.” (Bonatti, BA p925)

He continues to write about Masha’allah, who said that:

“… if Saturn were direct in an angle [which is the case here], it signifies many rains, and the contentions of the wealthy; and more strongly so, if he were to receive the rulership of Mars and his strength – for it signifies then that the rustics or common people will contend with the king.” (Bonatti, BA p926)

Saturn is conjunct fixed star Zuben Eschamali (also known as North Scale), a sign of good fortune, high ambition, honours, riches, and favourable for gain and domestic matters, according to Vivian Robson’s Fixed Stars & Constellations in Astrology.

The only other planet in an angular house is Mars, in Sagittarius. Mars is not essentially debilitated, and, once again, we see that a malefic planet becomes an accidental benefic by house and sign placement. Bonatti writes:

“… and if he were in the domiciles of Jupiter, it signifies a multitude of substance, and the acquisitions of those doing business.” (Bonatti, BA p949)

United States of America

Shown below is the ingress chart for the United States of America:

2014 Libra Ingress Washington

I propose Mercury to be Lord of the Revolution for the USA. He is in Libra, in the 5th house, which is unfortunately not an ideal placement. Bonatti warns us that Mercury in Libra:

“… signifies powerful and severe winds are going to come in that revolution.” (Bonatti, BA p970)

He also knows that Mercury in the 4th house signifies:

” … exchanges of words between men more so than usual; also contentions and sorrows or griefs that are going to fall between men.” (Bonatti, BA p972)

Looking at Jupiter, who was Lord of the Aries ingress chart, we see that he is essentially dignified by Triplicity and Face. He is located in the 3rd house. Bonatti writes:

“… it signifies good fortune from one brother to another, and between them. And men will rejoice because of their relatives, and especially younger ones, and first or older sisters.” (Bonatti, BA p942)
