Total Lunar Eclipse 16 May 2022

On 16 May, there will be a total lunar eclipse, being exact at 4:14UT. The totality will last 85 minutes, which gives us an idea about the duration of the effect of this eclipse.

The chart below, cast for Washington, shows the eclipse:

Before we are going to discuss any possible effects on the individual, we should have a look at the mundane astrological implications of this eclipse. To be able to do this, we need to establish where the eclipse is likely to have its greatest effect. For this purpose we need to look at the countries or cities falling under the rulership of Scorpio, the sign wherein the eclipse Moon resides during the event.

These are: Italy (Aquilea), Bavaria, Morocco (Fez), France, Monaco, Turkey, and Austria (Vienna).

We also have to take into consideration that the eclipse’s visibility will greatly enhance its effect. Looking at the path of angularity, we can see the following:

It is clearly visible that Halifax is on the Moon’s MC line, indicating that Canada may experience some of the eclipse’s influence. With Mars as eclipse ruler, we can turn to William Lilly to find out what to expect:

“… generally is the cause of corruption in regard of his too much dryness, and this especially when he is in a fiery Sign. […] he stirs up Wars, Seditions, intestine risings, and tumults, imprisonment, banishment, besieging and taking towns and cities.”

William Lilly also writes in his Annus Tenebrosus, or The Dark Year, that:

“…] in an Eclipse of the Moon, so many hours as she is defective or suffers an Eclipse, so many moneths the Events thereby signified shall continue.”

This means that the current eclipse could affect us until the end of June 2022.

The eclipsed Moon will be in Scorpio, wherein she is in her Fall. The exact location is 25 degrees, placing her in Scorpio’s 3rd Decanate. Decanate ruler is Venus, which makes her eclipse co-ruler, together with Mars, who has sign rulership in Scorpio.

Again, we can look to Lilly, who wrote that a lunar eclipse in the 3rd Decanate of Scorpio promises:

“many seditions, murthers and all manner of wretched- nesse succeeds, mankind oppressed with abundance of obnoxious diseases, and these generall”.

In the eclipse chart, Venus is in her Fall, which together with the eclipsed, essentially debilitated Moon doesn’t bode well. Debilitated Venus indicates a distortion of all the positive values she signifies in her dignified state. These include extravagance, infidelity, licentiousness and greed. Also, Luna is in a square aspect with Saturn, the Greater Malefic. This adds to the general theme of misery and foreboding, suggesting the possibility of loss or separation. Due to her apparent fluctuation (i.e. lunar phases), the Moon generally indicates inconsistency and change, but when debilitated, it also adds inactivity, instability, and passive behaviour which can even go as far as inertia.

On the positive side, we can see that Mars, who is eclipse co-ruler, is strongly dignified. This suggests that courage and action may help to overcome even the biggest obstacles.

(Jake Baddeley, Moonsong, 2009)

For those who are interested in the personal implications of this eclipse, it might be of interest what William Lilly has to say:

“… [an] eclipse is more dangerous or pernitious which shall be in the Horoscope or Ascendant of the birth; or which shall be in the degree Ascending in an Annuall Revolution: it portends unto the Native some ominous and mischievous action as unto his body and also in his vital substance [also] who had in the Radix of his Nativity either the Sun or the Moon in that degree, or in the degree opposite […] or in the like degrees […] which signs are in Quadrate aspects to the former, or if the degree Culminating in any man’s Nativity was either [the degree of the eclipse or its opposite or square] or within one degree therof, the native did suffer more or less by the influence of this Eclips; according to the signification of the House of Heaven, wherein the Sun or the Moon was in at the Birth, and was either well fortified or aspected of the benevolent Planets, or ill aspected, or afflicted of the Malevolents.”

For this particular lunar eclipse that means that people with 25* Scorpio/Taurus rising or culminating, either in their birth chart or in their Solar Revolution chart, will feel the influence stronger than others. Furthermore, it should be noted if natal Sun or Moon are conjunct the eclipse point.

If it should be the case that one or even more of these factors apply, an in-depth reading of the native’s charts may be necessary to find out which particular areas of life are likely to be affected the most.

    • Thank you for your comment, very interesting, as you say. I would appreciate it if you let me know the effect the eclipse had on you. It all adds to my research into the effects of eclipses on people. Thanks and take good care …

  2. Thanks Peter. I have been trying to understand how this eclipse will affect me as I have natal Uranus at 21.51 Scorpio (fourth house), Saturn at 27 Virgo (third house) and Venus at 19.20 Cancer (twelve house). Would you understand that the eclipse activates my Uranus and Saturn?
